NCI: A drug that protects healthy tissues from the toxic effects of anticancer drugs.,PDQ: A synthetic chelating agent related to EDTA. Pentetic acid calcium chelates with the metallic radioisotopic moieties of unbound, extracellular radioimmunotherapeutic agents, resulting in higher specific tumor cell binding of radioimmunotherpeutic agents, and so improved tumor cell radiocytotoxicity, while sparing normal cells and tissues from the radiocytotoxic effects of these agents.
