MSH: A proinflammatory cytokine produced primarily by T-LYMPHOCYTES or their precursors. Several subtypes of interleukin-17 have been identified, each of which is a product of a unique gene.,NCI: Interleukin-17, encoded by the IL17 gene, is a proinflammatory cytokine produced by activated T cells. This cytokine regulates the activities of NF-kappaB and mitogen-activated protein kinases. This cytokine can stimulate the expression of IL6 and cyclooxygenase-2 (PTGS2/COX-2), as well as enhance the production of nitric oxide (NO). High levels of this cytokine are associated with several chronic inflammatory diseases including rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis and multiple sclerosis. (From LocusLink),NCI: Interleukin 17 is a homodimer expressed in stimulated, but not resting, cytotoxic T-cells that induces stromal cells to produce pro-inflammatory and hematopoietic cytokines. IL17 enhances expression of IL6, IL8, and ICAM-1 in fibroblasts and appears to induce osteoclastogenesis and ODF, a membrane-associated protein
