MSH: A CC-type chemokine that is specific for CCR3 RECEPTORS. It is a potent chemoattractant for EOSINOPHILS.,NCI: Chemoattractant cytokines (chemokines) are important for leukocyte recruitment to inflammatory lesions. The eotaxin chemokine is a potent chemoattractant for eosinophil migration and accumulation. A high-affinity eotaxin receptor CCR3, involved in allergic inflammation, is highly expressed on eosinophils, basophils, and TH2 lymphocytes. CCR3, a GPCR, induces a calcium response in eosinophils, and also binds RANTES and monocyte chemotactic protein-3. Eotaxin also interacts with CCR2 and CCR5 receptors and thus can affect monocyte responses. In monocytes, eotaxin modifies responsiveness to the CCR2 ligand MCP1, as well as to RANTES and MIP1-beta, which bind to CCR5; eotaxin is a CCR5 agonist and a CCR2 antagonist. Eotaxin also induces endothelial cell migration and angiogenesis. (from OMIM 601156 and NCI)
