The putative effector-binding site of MEL is similar to that of RAB/YPT proteins. However, MEL contains a C-terminal CAAX motif characteristic of many RAS superfamily members but which is not found in YPT1 and the majority of RAB proteins. Members of the RAS superfamily are small GTP/GDP-binding proteins.
