UMD: Tubing made of synthetic polymers such as nylon, polyurethane, and silicone that include interwoven layers of other materials (e.g., stainless steel, Dacron) to increase their strength (i.e., braided tubes). Braided polymer tubing is typically a hollow cylinder designed for the transfer of fluids, either liquids or gases, at high pressures. These devices may be rigid or semirigid according to the intended use. Braided polymer tubing is usually available in standardized lengths and in a variety of diameters and wall thicknesses (i.e., gauges) that permit the use of segments of different sizes appropriate for a given application in the healthcare facility.
