UMD: Aerobic exercisers designed to allow the user to exercise by walking and/or running on a moving belt. These devices typically consist of a continuous tread made of polymeric material and electric motors to move the belts, but the belts, may be moved by the user while walking or jogging (passive treadmills); a monitor that displays workout feedback such as speed, time, calories burned, and heart rate; and controls for the belt speed and slope. Treadmill exercisers are used to increase cardiovascular endurance by keeping the heart and pulmonary rate elevated for a continuous period of time. Additionally, they provide strength and endurance to muscles used while walking or running (i.e., quadriceps, hamstrings, calf, gluteus).
