UMD: Small-caliber plunger syringes used to administer liquids (e.g., drug solutions) through a hollow needle beneath the skin (i.e., hypodermic needle). These syringes typically include a small-diameter, low-volume cylinder, calibrated either in cubic centimeters (cc) or milliliters (mL); some are specially designed to inject specific drugs (e.g., insulin, tuberculin). Most hypodermic syringes attached to appropriate needles may also be used for intramuscular and/or intravenous injection.
