UMD: Devices designed for safe transfer of radioisotopes, protecting the user from harmful radiation. These units typically consist of a metal (stainless steel) or plastic container with a lead liner and appropriate handles for easy manipulation; the thickness of the lead shielding (e.g., 0.25, 0.5, or 1 inch) depends of the quantity and quality of the radioactive material to be transferred. Radioisotope transfer units are used for intra- and interhospital transportation of syringes, vials, and other devices containing radioisotopes.
