UMD: Instruments designed to measure the concentration of dissolved oxygen (DO) in solutions. These instruments typically consist of an electronic unit that processes the electric signal from a sensor and displays the oxygen concentration values and probes with a sensor that detects the DO level and a transducer that converts the oxygen values to electrical signals. Some meters have computerized capabilities and dedicated software to process the information. The meters usually include temperature compensation and salinity correction to enable measurements to be taken in salt water. DO meters are intended mainly to measure DO in water, salt water, and/or aqueous solutions. The instruments frequently include probes that permit measuring oxygen concentration in the environment and software with algorithms that permit the automated determination of biological oxygen demand (BOD). Portable and laboratory instruments are available.
