UMD: Oximeters designed primarily for determining the relative amount of oxygenated and deoxygenated hemoglobin (O2Hb and HHb, respectively) by measuring light absorbence changes resulting from arterial blood flow pulsations and displaying the results as percent saturation of hemoglobin in arterial blood (SpO2). These oximeters include red and infrared light sources (typically LEDs of 660 and 940 nm), photodetectors, and probes that transmit light through a pulsating arterial bed, such as the finger tip, earlobe, or toe. Pulse oximeters are used in operating rooms, intensive care units, recovery rooms, and sometimes in emergency vehicles or for patient respiratory care at home.
