UMD: Devices designed to hold surgical knives (i.e., scalpels) during operative procedures. These holders typically consist of a plastic case that partially or completely encloses the cutting blade and/or permits the positioning of the knife to keep the blade down, diminishing the risk of injury to the healthcare staff. Knife holders typically support several knives in separate compartments simultaneously, permitting the appropriate organization of the knives to be used in a surgical procedure; most holders are disposable devices that are discarded with the knives after the procedure is finished. The holders may be provided with adhesive tape to fix them to a working surface (e.g., procedure tray) or to another convenient place (e.g., surgical table, standing rack, pole).
