UMD: Devices designed to separate the surfaces of a joint without displacement and/or rupture of the ligaments (i.e., distraction). These distractors are typically a mechanism that may include clamps, screws, and levers. Distractors are intended mainly for use during surgical procedures in the joints, but some dedicated distractors are used for physical therapy and rehabilitation, frequently after joint surgery and/or to provide stable traction for reduction and fixation of joint and other small fractures. Dedicated distractors intended for use in the hand, wrist, shoulder, knee, spine, and hip articulations are available.
