The combination of diffusion and ultrafiltration is known as dialysis. These devices basically consist of two compartments containing the solution to be dialyzed and the solution that performs the dialysis (dialysate), separated by a membrane. Dialyzers are used in clinical laboratories for several procedures, including cerebrospinal fluid concentration, urine protein concentration, and electrophoresis sample preparation; other dialyzers appropriate for the dialysis of blood (hemodialysis) are frequently used in clinical practice.
