UMD: Biopsy instruments designed for the automatic extraction of core tissue samples (typically in the form of a cylinder) from an anatomic structure with minimal damage to the sample and surrounding tissue. Biopsy guns are typically handheld, manual instruments with a spring-loaded mechanism for transcutaneous insertion of a biopsy needle to obtain tissue samples intended for laboratory examination and/or test (i.e. biopsy). Biopsy guns are used mainly to obtain large samples of soft tissue from internal organs, including the kidneys, prostate, pancreas, and liver, and the breast. The procedures are frequently performed under image guidance (e.g., radiographic, ultrasonic, magnetic resonance).
