SPN: An oropharyngeal airway is a device inserted into a patient's pharynx through the mouth to provide a patent airway.,UMD: Artificial airways designed for insertion through the mouth to keep the tongue from occluding the upper airway, permitting the passage of oxygen to the lungs. These airways typically consist of a hollow, large-diameter curved plastic tube with a protruding rim (flange) at the proximal end; when inserted the flange rests against the lips, the curvature of the artificial airway follows the contour of the tongue, and the distal end opens into the pharynx. Oropharyngeal artificial airways are available in several sizes to accommodate the patient's anatomic characteristics. They are intended for temporary use during resuscitation and/or in unconscious patients to permit or facilitate breathing and also to facilitate suctioning through it.
