MSH: A bone morphogenetic protein that is widely expressed during EMBRYONIC DEVELOPMENT. It is both a potent osteogenic factor and a specific regulator of nephrogenesis.,NCI: Bone Morphogenetic Protein 7 (BMP7), encoded by the BMP7 gene, is a member of the TGF-beta family. BMP7 signals through receptor serine/threonine kinases and has very strong similarity to murine Bmp7. BMP7 plays a role in calcium regulation and bone homeostasis. It induces cartilage and bone formation and may be the osteoinductive factor responsible for the phenomenon of epithelial osteogenesis. BMP7 is expressed in the kidney and bladder and lower levels are seen in the brain. At all anatomical sites disrupted by Holt-Oram syndrome mutations, BMP7 is expressed in all structures that are altered in Holt-Oram Syndrome patients, including the heart, proximal and distal forelimb, clavicle, and scapula, as well as other unaffected tissues. (NCI)
