MSH: A type of scanning probe microscopy in which a very sharp conducting needle is swept just a few angstroms above the surface of a sample. The tiny tunneling current that flows between the sample and the needle tip is measured, and from this are produced three-dimensional topographs. Due to the poor electron conductivity of most biological samples, thin metal coatings are deposited on the sample.,CSP: indirect, molecular-resolution imaging technique based on the surface tracings of a mobile probe; in contrast to AFM the probe is driven by ionic tunneling and the image therefore depends on the conductance properties of the specimen.,NCI: An imaging technique that produces a view of the surface of a sample at the atomic level by detecting variations in the current between a conducting tip and the reactive elements within the sample.
