MSH: A cytokine with both pro- and anti-inflammatory actions that depend upon the cellular microenvironment. Oncostatin M is a 28 kDa monomeric glycoprotein that is similar in structure to LEUKEMIA INHIBITORY FACTOR. Its name derives from the the observation that it inhibited the growth of tumor cells and augmented the growth of normal fibroblasts.,NCI: Oncostatin M, a glycoprotein with an approximate molecular weight of 28,000, was originally isolated from a conditioned medium of human leukemia cells that had been induced to differentiate into macrophage-like cells by treatment with phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate. OSM has the ability to inhibit the growth of human A375 melanoma cells but not normal human fibroblasts; hence, its name. It is a member of the IL-6 family of cytokines that is primarily known for its effects on cell growth.,NCI: A member of the cytokine family that regulates the proliferation and differentiation of a variety of cell types. This family of proteins adopts a four-helix bundle fold w
