NCI: A substance being studied in the treatment of several types of cancer. It is a form of a chemical taken from the seed of the cotton plant (Gossypium). It blocks the growth of cells and may kill cancer cells. Gossypol acetic acid may also act as a male contraceptive (form of birth control).,NCI: The naturally occurring acetic acid form of gossypol, and an orally available polyphenolic aldehyde derived mostly from cottonseed with potential antineoplastic activity. The biologic activities of gossypol acetic acid are similar to those of gossypol and include suppression of DNA replication, inhibition of tumor cell proliferation, and male contraceptive effects.
