MSH: A synthetic progestational hormone used often as the progestogenic component of combined oral contraceptive agents.,NCI: A synthetic progestogen with progesterone hormone receptor agonistic activity. Desogestrel binds intracellular progesterone receptors in progesterone responsive tissue and the resultant complex interacts with DNA and results in either gene transcription or gene repression. This leads to an inhibition of LH release and prevents ovulation and alters the cervical mucus. Desogestrel is used in birth control pills alone or in combination with estrogens.
