MSH: A ubiquitously-expressed cysteine protease that plays an enzymatic role in POST-TRANSLATIONAL PROTEIN PROCESSING of proteins within SECRETORY GRANULES.,NCI: Gastric carcinoma cells that oversecrete cathepsins B and L have a high invasive and metastatic potential. Tumors invading the muscularis propria showed significantly higher cathepsin B and L expression than those that invaded only the submucosal layer. Tumors with lymphatic invasion showed higher cathepsin B expression, whereas tumors with venous invasion showed higher cathepsin L expression. (from Cancer 2000;89:482-487 via Medscape),NCI: Cathepsin L, encoded by the CTSL Gene, is a lysosomal cysteine proteinase that plays a major role in intracellular protein catabolism. It is important for the overall degradation of proteins in lysosomes. Its substrates include collagen and elastin, as well as alpha-1 protease inhibitor, a major controlling element of neutrophil elastase activity. Cathepsin L has been implicated in several pathologic processes, in
