MSH: A group of compounds that contain the structure SO2NH2. Members of this group, also known as sulfa drugs, are derivatives of sulfanilamide, which competitively inhibit folic acid synthesis in microorganisms, and are bacteriostatic. They have been largely supplanted by more effective and less toxic antibiotics. (From Dorland, 28th ed),CSP: the chemical group -SO2NH2; do not confuse with BENZENESULFONAMIDE, which are the family of bacteriocidal "sulfa drugs" and diuretics related to sulfanilamide.,NCI: A type of antibiotic used to treat infection.,NCI: A class of natural or synthetic sulfanilamide derivatives with antibacterial activity. Sulfonamides are structural analogs of para-aminobenzoic acid (essential for microbial folate synthesis). Sulfonamides inhibit bacterial metabolism by competing with PABA for dihydropteroate synthase, thereby resulting in disruption of folic acid metabolism and ultimately DNA synthesis.
