(Dorland, 28th ed),UMD: Rigid or flexible appliances of plastic, wood, metal, or plaster that are used to immobilize and protect body parts injured by fractures, sprains, dislocated joints, and muscle strains. They are also used during x-ray and before casting to keep the injured part stable. Generally, splints are placed on the posterior side of the body part and are kept on with straps or belts or by wrapping a bandage around both the body part and splint.
