MSH: An exchange of segments between the sister chromatids of a chromosome, either between the sister chromatids of a meiotic tetrad or between the sister chromatids of a duplicated somatic chromosome. Its frequency is increased by ultraviolet and ionizing radiation and other mutagenic agents and is particularly high in BLOOM SYNDROME.,NCI: Any homology-dependent DNA strand exchange that occurs between sister chromatids in mitotic cells. This process is involved in creating combinations of genes that may be unique from the parent duplexes. Disruptions in this process may result in inviability, premature aging and predisposition to a broad variety of cancers.
