MSH: Devices that babies can suck on when they are not feeding. The extra sucking can be comforting to the babies and pacify them. Pacifiers usually are used as a substitute for the thumb in babies who suck on their thumb or fingers almost constantly.,UMD: Pacifiers designed to promote an infant's oral sucking action. These pacifiers typically consist of a nipple (latex or silicone) mounted on a plastic shield that is designed to prevent the infant from swallowing the device; the shields usually have some holes to circulate air and saliva to help protect the infant's skin from chafing. Oral infant pacifiers are used to calm infants; they are available in different sizes and shapes appropriate to fit the infant's mouth.
