MSH: Sterile solutions, essentially free from foreign particles and suitably compounded and dispensed, for instillation into the eye. It does not include solutions for cleaning eyeglasses or CONTACT LENS SOLUTIONS. (From Dorland, 27th ed),NCI: A sterile solution containing a particular pharmaceutical agent administered to the external eye, usually in the form of droplets. An ophthalmic solution may contain different drugs with different mechanisms of actions, to target symptoms and their underlying cause. Classes of pharmacological agents used include antibiotics, beta-adrenergic agents, antihistamines, corticosteroids and prostanoids. The ophthalmic solution can be used to treat increased intraocular pressure, symptoms of allergic conjunctivitis, and ocular bacterial infections.
