In some cells, asparate selectively increases the membrane permeability to chloride, giving rise to a hyperpolarization, while on other cells it increases the permeability to sodium, causing a depolarization. There are also specific receptors for L-glutamate which mediate sodium, chloride, or potassium conductance increases, and another class of receptors activated by both glutamate and aspartate.lld:pubmed
