pubmed-article:7319802pubmed:otherAbstractPIP: Federal support for development of university-based interdisciplinary research centers focusing on problems of health care delivery became available in 1967. Primary care has become the dominant theme of research at the Center for Health Sciences research at the University of North Carolina. Such research focuses on the role and function of primary care within the total health service delivery system, with attention to the organizational changes needed to facilitate effective service delivery by primary care providers. 2 studies at the North Carolina center have contributed to development of techniques for determining the need for additional primary care providers. Other center research aims to define the content of primary care practice and the role and importance of the hospital in primary care. Studies are also underway which examine the treatment of partiuclar clinical problems by primary care practitioners and the linkages of primary with other levels of care. Alternative models for organization of primary care are being examined in several projects which focus special attention on the primary care needs of rural areas. 1 of these projects will attempt to determine which of several approaches to primary care provides the greatest benefit in terms of access to care, financial and personnel stability, impact of the program on significant health indicators, and user satisfaction.lld:pubmed
