pubmed-article:6138826pubmed:abstractTextLambs sucking ewes immunised four to five weeks before parturition with crude preparations of K99 and purified K99 pili of single subunit composition were protected against challenge infection with heterologous enteropathogenic Escherichia coli strains. In contrast, the majority of lambs sucking sham-immunised ewes suffered severe diarrhoea and dehydration, followed by death in nearly half of the affected lambs. Protection was related to the presence of antibody in the colostral whey and lamb sera. K99-specific antibody activity in the colostral whey was found to be confined to IgM and IgG (IgG1 and IgG2) but not to the IgA class.lld:pubmed
