pubmed-article:5784488 | pubmed:otherAbstract | PIP: 31 cases of medullary carcinoma, representing 5.1% of 600 cases of thyroid tumors, are discussed in this study. Mean age of patients was 43.2; in 11 cases the carcinoma was associated to diarrhea, which disappeared in 8 cases after surgery. 26 patients were treated surgically; of these 15 were still living an average of 13.5 years after surgery. Morbidity of medullary carcinoma seems to be independent of age and of sex; the origin of medullary carcinoma diarrhea may, according to some studies, be influenced by the action of prostaglandins on smooth muscle. | lld:pubmed |
