| pubmed-article:2691066 | pubmed:abstractText | Because increased peripheral vascular resistance is one of the primary pathophysiologic processes involved in hypertension in elderly persons, drugs that decrease peripheral resistance are conceptually preferred in elderly hypertensive patients. Adequate clinical studies are needed, however, to determine if this conceptual approach is superior to an empiric approach.
