pubmed-article:2317584pubmed:abstractTextThe conceptual and empirical basis of a treatment programme for the prevention of severe alcohol or drug-related problems is described. The approach rests on the assumption that clients are capable of self-control and of taking responsibility for much of their treatment. We also believe that offering clients choices, particularly about the goal of treatment, is conducive to better outcome. The treatment involves cognitive and behavioural techniques which have been gradually refined in outcome studies with clients of diverse characteristics, and with abstinence or moderation as goals. It is proposed that the treatment model is suitable as a true self-help procedure, or as a brief intervention for primary care health professionals.lld:pubmed
