pubmed-article:2232730pubmed:abstractTextThis paper describes the conceptualization, development, planning, and implementation of a new professional preparation course entitled "AIDS/HIV Education: Issues and Strategies." The 15-week, campuswide course was offered through the Dept. of Health Science Education at the University of Florida during spring semester 1990. Though universities have been identified as providers of preservice education for future teachers and health professionals, current activities often have been deemed inadequate to meet the needs of those charged with providing AIDS/HIV education. This course was implemented to address an array of issues related to HIV education, ranging from epidemiological and biomedical information and educational strategies to examination of personal and ethical issues surrounding the disease. Delivery of a successful course and student reaction are discussed, along with recommendations for programs considering similar educational efforts. General course goals are to provide accurate, current information regarding HIV/AIDS, to engender attitudes that acknowledge personal risk for HIV infection, to provide skill for reducing high-risk behaviors known to contribute to HIV infection, to reduce unreasonable fears about the transmission of HIV, to foster compassionate and caring responses to people with HIV infection and AIDS, to provide support for needed services for people with HIV infection and AIDS, and to increase attention to important economic, social, ethical, legislative, legal, and psychological issues created by HIV/AIDS. Delivery of a successful course include credible guest lecturers, small group discussions lead by 2 graduate students, and current audiovisual resources. Overall, the student reaction was positive; they felt the course increased their knowledge and awareness of AIDS/HIV, their sensitivity and compassion toward those affected by the disease, and their willingness to acknowledge and speak openly about the disease. This course can serve as a model for programs considering similar educational efforts; a combination of credible guest lecturers, current resources, and the small group process could be beneficial to other colleges and universities.
