Traditional classification suggests two types of hypoxia: chronic and acute. Acute hypoxia is mostly caused by transient disruptions in perfusion, while chronic hypoxia is caused by diffusion limitations. This classification may be insufficient in terms of pathogenetic and pathophysiological mechanisms.
