pubmed-article:2078217 | pubmed:abstractText | Suture materials have some important biological effects which may influence the rate of early and late anastomotic complications. The risk of dehiscence is increased by those materials stimulating a local phlogistic reaction, therefore delaying the activation of the repairing process. Not absorbable sutures cause a chronic granulomatous reaction that may result in cicatricial stenosis. Experimental studies suggest surgical sutures to act as a nidus for adhesions and growth of exfoliated tumor cells. This property is greater for the natural and braided materials. | lld:pubmed |
