Challenges involving access to health care, working with limited resources, increased reliance on history and physical examination skills, understanding cultural differences, and determining the appropriate level of care or intervention are inherent to these experiences. We designed an international elective to provide these opportunities and to instill a sense of volunteerism and service in our residents. The first resident to choose this rotation gained significant insight into global health issues, gained exposure to a broad spectrum of surgical pathology, and had a strong operative experience. Institutional involvement with either domestic or international medically underserved areas has the potential to provide our residents with valuable opportunities for cross-cultural exchange of knowledge and experience. | lld:pubmed |
