pubmed-article:19298933pubmed:abstractTextAcute limb ischemia is a common medical condition resulting from arterial embolization, in situ thrombosis, trauma, and other causes. The severity of injury is related to the duration of ischemia and the effects of reperfusion. Metabolic consequences of reperfusion injury can be variable, ranging from transient symptoms in the lower extremity to systemic inflammation with multiple organ dysfunction. This article provides an overview of some of the key mediators of reperfusion injury. Additional discussion is focused on the clinical effects of reperfusion in the extremity, as well as the pulmonary, cardiac, and renal organ systems. A better understanding of these processes may result in improved patient outcomes and decreased mortality.lld:pubmed
