pubmed-article:12206006pubmed:abstractTextTo investigate whether sheep blood could be replaced with human serum or fetal calf serum for Helicobacter pylori(Hp) culture, Hp was inoculated onto the culture plates containing 7% of sheep blood, human serum, or fetal calf serum respectively. The colonies were counted after 5 days of culture. Similar culture results were obtained in the plates containing sheep blood, human serum, or fetal calf serum respectively. No effect of anti-Hp-IgG antibody in human serum on the growth of Hp was found (P > 0.05). However, heat-inactivated human serum significantly suppressed the growth of Hp (P < 0.01). Human serum or fetal calf serum may be used for Hp culture where sheep blood is not available. Bactericidal activity against Hp in human serum is mediated by complements.lld:pubmed
