To present an elderly woman clinically and manometrically diagnosed with achalasia of the cardia who was treated by dilatation. When the patient relapsed and was surgically treated she was found to have and esophageal adenocarcinoma. When considering a diagnosis of achalasia, alternative diagnoses (especially neoplasias) should be borne in mind, especially in unusual situations, such as rapid onset or in the elderly. | lld:pubmed |
