This upstream portion of tryptophan degradation is found in many eukaryotes (including all metazoa) and some prokaryotes. The compound |FRAME: 2-AMINO-3-3-OXOPROP-2-ENYL-BUT-2-ENEDI|, at which this pathway ends, is a branching point: it can be processed via |FRAME: 2K-ADIPATE| to be completely degraded to acetyl-CoA and ammonia, it can be channeled to form |FRAME: QUINOLINATE|, a precursor for NAD. This pathway occurs in the cytoplasm.
