MSH: An oval semitransparent membrane separating the external EAR CANAL from the tympanic cavity (EAR, MIDDLE). It contains three layers: the skin of the external ear canal; the core of radially and circularly arranged collagen fibers; and the MUCOSA of the middle ear.,NCI: A thin membrane that separates the external auditory canal from the middle ear. The movement of the tympanic membrane in response to air pressure changes in the external ear facilitates the transmission of sound energy by causing vibration of the ossicular chain.
