14 male chronic schizophrenic patients were treated over 3 months with carbamazepine, mostly as an adjunct to neuroleptics. Psychopathological status was assessed using the Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale. A significant improvement was found in the following categories: excitement (p less than 0.01) and tension (p less than 0.05). But no beneficial effect on the schizophrenic defect could be detected.
